Stretch Marks During Pregnancy: Causes, Prevention, and Proper Care

What Are Stretch Marks

What Are Stretch Marks?

Stretch marks, or striae distensae, are fine lines that appear on the skin’s surface due to rapid stretching. When the collagen and elastin fibers in the dermis are stretched beyond their capacity, they can break and form visible streaks on the skin.

Characteristics of stretch marks:

  • Initially appear pink, reddish-purple, or brown, and gradually fade into silvery-white lines.

  • May feel slightly raised or indented when touched, and over time can flatten into wrinkle-like lines.

  • Commonly found on the abdomen, thighs, buttocks, breasts, and upper arms.

Why Do Stretch Marks Appear During Pregnancy?

Several key factors contribute to the development of stretch marks during pregnancy:

  • Rapid growth of the belly and body, especially in the second and third trimesters.

  • Hormonal changes, particularly the increase in cortisol, which reduces skin elasticity.

  • Genetics, where family history plays a significant role.

  • Younger maternal age (<25 years), which has been shown to carry a higher risk.

Research shows that 50–90% of pregnant women experience stretch marks, depending on individual risk factors (JAAD, 2016).

How to Care for Skin and Reduce the Risk of Stretch Marks

While stretch marks cannot be completely prevented, consistent care can lower the risk and severity.

1. Use Moisturizers Regularly

Moisturizers help maintain skin elasticity and hydration, allowing it to adapt better to stretching during pregnancy. Apply at least twice a day, especially after bathing and before bedtime, on areas prone to stretch marks such as the belly, breasts, hips, thighs, and buttocks. Look for creams or lotions with proven skin-nourishing ingredients, such as:

  • Vitamins E, C, B5 → Antioxidants that support collagen production and protect against damage.

  • Centella Asiatica (CICA) → Stimulates collagen synthesis, repairs skin tissue, and improves elasticity.

  • Shea Butter & Cocoa Butter → Provide deep moisturization and protect skin from dryness.

  • Hyaluronic Acid → Attracts and locks in moisture, keeping skin plump and supple.

Consistent care helps strengthen the skin, keeping it hydrated and more resistant to tearing.

2. Manage Weight Gain

Maintaining a healthy weight gain during pregnancy helps the skin stretch gradually. Always consult with a healthcare professional regarding recommended weight gain.

3. Support Skin Health Through Nutrition

A balanced diet supports skin resilience. Key nutrients include:

  • At least 8 glasses of water daily for hydration.

  • Adequate protein, vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc, and omega-3 for collagen and skin repair.

4. Gentle Massage

Massaging areas prone to stretch marks with cream or oil may improve blood circulation and enhance product absorption, promoting elasticity.

Treating Stretch Marks After Pregnancy

If stretch marks have already formed, several methods can help reduce their appearance.

1. Topical Treatments

Applying creams, lotions, or oils directly to the skin can improve hydration, support cell regeneration, and restore elasticity. These are most effective on newer stretch marks (pink or purple) rather than older, silvery ones, as early-stage skin is more responsive to treatment.

2. Dermatological Treatments

For more advanced or persistent stretch marks, dermatologists may recommend:

  • Fractional Non-Ablative Laser

Stimulates collagen production in the dermis without damaging the skin’s surface, resulting in smoother texture and less visible marks.

  • Microneedling

Uses fine needles to create micro-injuries, triggering natural healing and collagen formation. Often combined with serums for better results.

  • Chemical Peels

Apply chemical solutions to exfoliate the outer layer, promoting new skin growth and evening skin tone.

  • PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma)

Involves injecting platelet-rich plasma from the patient’s own blood into the stretch marks to accelerate healing and tissue repair.

Stretch marks during pregnancy are a natural condition experienced by most women due to physiological and hormonal changes. While they cannot be fully prevented, proper skin care, hydration, weight management, and nutrition can help reduce their risk and severity.

Postpartum treatments—whether topical or dermatologist-recommended—can also improve the appearance of stretch marks, especially when started early. With the right approach, mothers can maintain healthy skin, boost confidence, and embrace pregnancy and postpartum with greater comfort.
